Today Is a New Day
Today Is a New Day
Today is a new day
and tomorrow will be the same
but will tomorrow ever get here
are the questions that pass my brain
The past I love so much
Because the present is filled with pain
How did I end up at Donaldson
Where they house the criminally insane?
Is that what I am too?
May I ask who’s to blame?
Why do I have to be rehabilitated?
I have life without the possibility for parole.
These are the thoughts that flood the system
That once kept my life on hold
I’m forty-one years of age.
And it took me thirty-five to become a man.
I’m not the same person I was at twenty-one
I’m trying my damnedest to have you understand
It’s not easy for me or my family
My siblings think it’s best to avoid me
Here, I find myself alone
Sometimes fading into the darkness
Do Americans believe in second chances?
America, how can you sit back and watch this?
Lynching is at an all time high
But you can’t see it with the naked eye
America was built on Christianity
God is love! So Christian, why can’t you stand me.
My country tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty
That’s just a fantasy
That phrase don’t apply to me.
